Colombian President Declares 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the rhetoric of their war of words, increasing strains between the two countries after American military units struck Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Growing Threats coupled with Claims

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump hinted at analogous armed intervention against Colombia, stating the country is “very sick too” and governed by a problematic figure involved in producing the drug and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of Washington in the fight combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated markedly since Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

The President's Firm Response

When asked whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent a period in his early life participating of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in drafting a new constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to never again hold arms again ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he vowed.

Increased Security and Widespread Rejection

The Colombian defence minister announced that the president’s personal security had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump, however, leaders from all sides of the political spectrum have rejected the notion of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

Washington revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged US troops to disobey any illegal orders. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various key allies.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces near Venezuela and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
