Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
